-Olivia felt that he put more interest in her than in the other guests–>liked how he looked at her

The reader only gets to know a few information about Olivia’s life after the elopement. After leaving the hospital, she went to the palace and since then nobody ever heard a singel word from her. The narrator only can tell things that she read in the letters to Marcia (which were not that detailed as they used to be) or what her relatives and Harry told her. The only information which is given, is that the Nawab bought a house in the mountains, where she stayed for the rest of her life. Olivia never returned to England.

The narrator’s reaction on the news of her own pregnancy is unusual, because first of all she is more impressed by the fact that Maji already knows that she is pregnant than about how she is going to be a mother. But somehow she seems to already have made her decision to have the baby because she is denying Maji’s suggestion of an abortion. The following sentence makes it  clear how she feels about having a baby:

“Then my sensations were mainly of amusement and interest , so that I went skipping in and out of puddles, laughing to myself  when I trod in them and got splashed.” (p.129 ll.12-15)      

Harry plays an important role at this point of the novel. Because of him the reader gets a more critical view of the Nawab. He is the one who told Olivia that it is not right to continue the meetings with the Indian prince, without Douglas knowing it. Besides, he claims,  it is strange that Olivia never got to meet the Begum although she  is a very significant person in the Nawab’s life. That is something like a hint to the fact that he might not have the same serious feelings for her, as she has for him. Harry, although a very good friend of the Nawab, sees their relationship as a instrument of the Nawab’s to get back on the British for interferring in his affairs.

Inder Lal’s wife, named Ritu is a very shy person. She barely talks to anyone and her appearence seems to be weak,too. The narrator has the impression that her will is not that strong and that she might be the kind of person who gives in very quickly. Sometimes she tries to overcome herself and visits the narrator but after some minutes she shies away again.

In one night when it got too hot to sleep indoors, the narrator witnessed Ritu having an epileptic seizure.

Olivia always has been affected by graveyards. She likes walking around and reading the inscriptions. It is something that she had done in England and might be something that reminds her of home. The graveyard is a place of peace and calmness for her in which she can retire. At the same time, it reminds her of the bad circumstances of  having a baby in India because of the medical accommodations. She is afraid that she could experience the same as Mrs. Saunders did or that she could die while giving birth to her baby.
