The first two pages of the novel „Heat&Dust“, written by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, can be seen as an introduction. It gives a great deal of information about the characters, their relationships towards each other, and also an overview about the plot. In „Heat&Dust“ the narrator, a young woman (name unknown), explains how she is connected to the protagonist, Olivia Rivers, who was the first wife of the narrator’s grandfather, Douglas Rivers. He was a British offcial during the times of colonialism in India. Olivia always has been a forbidden topic in the family, because she eloped with an Indian prince. The narrator’s grandmother, Tessie, Douglas second wife, and her sister, Beth Crawford, began to talk about the behaviourof Olivia in their old years. That is how the narrator got to know her story in the first place, later on she was given more information by Harry, a friend of the Nawab, who lived in India while Douglas and Olivia were stationed in Satipur. He also gave letters to her, which Olivia wrote to her sister. Marcia, during her affair. The narrator , curious to know more about her grandfather’s first wife and her story, sets off to India in search for her family’s roots.
